Background Information: Dr. Jim Camberato Several PSI fertilizers were applied August 2, 2004 to TifEagle bermudagrass at a rate of 0.5 lb N/1000 sq. ft. Fertilizers were 7-2-5 100% water-insoluble N (WIN), 15-2-15 60% WIN, and 8-16-16 45% WIN. Also included were a no fertilizer treatment and an ammonium sulfate based 16-4-8 0% WIN treatments. Prior to application of the experimental treatments the green had been receiving various fast-release fertilizers at 0.25 lb N/1000 sq. ft. every other week during the summer. Plots are 3' by 40' and there are 2 replications of each treatment. Color was rated on a scale of 1-9 with 9=dark green. Color response of the bermudagrass at 9 days after application (DAA) is consistent with the percentage of WIN in the fertilizers. A slight increase in green color, in comparison to the no fertilizer treatment, was obtained with the PSI 7-2-5 100% WIN. Increased color with the 60% WIN 15-2-15 was 41% of the color increase with the fast release fertilizer. Increased color with the 45% WIN 8-16-16 was 59% of the color increase with the fast release fertilizer. Turf color with the 60% WIN 15-2-15 was comparable to the 0% WIN 16-4-8 from 15 to 23 days after application. The 45% WIN 8-16-16 attained color similar to 0% 16-4-8 at 15 days after application, but not at 18 or 23 DAA. The 100% WIN 7-2-5 continued to give a slight color enhancement in comparison to the no fertilizer treatment throughout the 23-day period.
